Helping Indiana hospitals make strides in maternal and infant care

When maternal and infant health thrives, everyone is better for it. That’s why we’re working closely with Indiana hospitals to help lower mortality rates. The INspire Hospital of Distinction program improves hospital practices by setting benchmarks for best practices, including prevention and intervention.

What is an INspire Hospital?

In 2020, IHA launched the first INspire recognition for Indiana birthing hospitals to voluntarily pursue. Our goals were to encourage environments that allow for successful application of evidence-based practices and provide recognition to hospitals taking steps towards excellence in key drivers of maternal and infant health. That year, we celebrated 19 hospitals who earned the INspire Category of Excellence recognition, and 64 hospitals achieved the more rigorous INspire Hospital of Distinction.

Evaluating hospitals on criteria that lead to the greatest impact

INspire's Categories of Recognition are listed below. Hospitals must keep showing quality improvements in key areas over time by using proven methods that enhance infant and maternal care. In partnership with Indiana's Governor and State Health Commissioner, the program is funded by the Indiana Department of Health's Safety PIN grant (Protecting Indiana's Newborns).

In 2024, 100% of Indiana’s delivering facilities received INspire recognition.
