Trauma centers are essential in the fight to save lives
Injury is the leading cause of death for Hoosiers under 45, making the work of trauma centers vital to sustaining lives. Indiana has 25 American College of Surgeons-certified trauma hospitals, and we’re helping to grow that number through grants and training initiatives.

Acute Care
Institutions providing care, accommodations, facilities, and equipment in connection with the services of a physician for individuals who need brief medical or surgical services.
Critical Access Hospital (CAH)
A public hospital owned and operated by a state (i.e. state psychiatric facilities).
Psychiatric
An institution providing residential care for people with mental health conditions.
Long-term Care (LTCH)
Certified acute‑care hospitals that focus on patients who stay more than 25 days (on average).
Rehabilitation
A specialty hospital that focuses on treating patients recovering from debilitating injuries, illnesses, surgeries, and chronic medical conditions, typically after an episode of care at an acute hospital.
Federal
A public hospital owned and operated by the federal government (i.e. Veterans Administration).
State
A public hospital owned and operated by a state (i.e. state psychiatric facilities).
